In an effort to slow the coronavirus pandemic, the US is expected to announce it will close its southern border with Mexico to all non-essential travel.
This move comes days after the Canadian border was closed for the same reason, and travel restrictions were placed on travelers coming from Europe and China. Now similar restrictions will apply to the US border with Mexico to seal the US off by land after restricting air arrivals.
With US cases of coronavirus soaring past 15000 and now ranking 6th in the world, the Department of Homeland Security has decided border closures are necessary to slow the coronavirus outbreak.
These measures will allow cargo and trade to continue, but tourism and other non-essential travel will be halted as the US prepares for the rapidly growing outbreak.
